“It was right there,” the man in the white visor said as he pointed his nine iron into the sky. “Then it flew right over the third fairway and out towards the ocean.” He swung his club wildly in a big arc to illustrate its flight path. I took a step back.

Behind me, a guy sitting in a golf cart said, “All the guys in the clubhouse saw it too.”

I nodded and pretended to write something down. I could tell this sighting wasn’t the real deal. Norm had sent me out to the Highlands Links golf course in Truro to follow up on another UFO sighting. Apparently the golfers had seen something, but it certainly didn’t sound like what I witnessed.

For a nine-hole golf course, Highlands Links looked pretty desolate. There weren’t many trees growing in the sandy soil beside the National Seashore. The biggest obstacle was the old lighthouse behind us. I looked in the direction the guy had pointed. On the horizon I could see a white dome sitting atop a tower. I was pretty sure it was the radar at Highlands Center.

“When did you see it?” I asked.

The one with the visor said, “About this same time yesterday.”

“And what did it look like again?”

“It was silver and dish-shaped. It flew nice and steady out towards the ocean. I could’t believe what I was seeing!”

The guy in the golf cart said, “We heard about all the UFO reports that have been going on lately. I was kind of skeptical, but once I actually saw one, I became a believer. It was pretty amazing.”

“Right,” visor-guy said. “We figured we needed to report this immediately.”

They looked at me for a moment in silence, as if I was going to supply some kind of answer to what they had seen. I’m a reporter, I only take down the information. How did I become the go-to person for supplying answers? I looked back to where he pointed and asked, “It wasn’t V-shaped?”

“No,” he answered, then walked over to his friend in the golf cart. “Donald, show her the video you took.”

Donald pulled out his phone. His movie showed a circular white dot moving slowly across the horizon. Visor-guy’s voice could be heard saying, “Donald! Are you getting it? Are you getting it?” With Donald replying, “I’m getting it! I’m getting it!” The white dot slowly receded into the distance. The footage became shakier, then the video stopped.

Visor-guy looked at me and said, “Can you believe it?”

I scratched my forehead and said, “I think it kind of looks like a weather balloon.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” he shot back. “It was a disk!”

“Yeah,” Donald said, flinging out his arms. “And it just shot off into the distance!”

Carefully, I replied, “Well, I remember seeing a video online of somebody launching a weather balloon at Highlands Center. Some kids were on a field trip.”

“Weather balloon, my ass!” visor-guy said. “I saw it myself.”

Donald shook his phone at me. “And we have video!”

I put away my notepad.
